Unfit Vehicle Process
A vehicle with damaged or unsafe components, which creates a possible safety risk on the road, is considered unfit. The damaged or unsafe components may or may not be related to a claim. This includes vehicles that do not meet the requirements set out by The Highway Traffic Act.
Refer to the Unfit Vehicles Estimating Standard to determine unfit vehicle issues.
When a repair shop discovers unfit vehicle concerns, they must report the issue to MPI, as follows:
- Upload photos and notes to the claim.
- Email the Accredited Repair department at AccreditedRepair@mpi.mb.ca and provide the following details:
- Claim number
- Brief description of the issue
- Primary shop contact
- Wait for further direction.
MPI Handling
MPI’s Accredited Repair department will determine the type of issue and decide which department will handle the claim. An Accredited Repair inspector will contact the repair shop to advise about the next steps.
Issue | Department |
Claim related repairs | Accredited Repair |
Prior claim related | Accredited Repair |
Light vehicle inspection standard issue | Vehicle Safety |
Body integrity inspection standard issue (improper rebuild) | Vehicle Safety |
Unfit issues may sometimes cause a vehicle to become a total loss. An adjuster will determine if the vehicle is repairable and contact the customer to advise about their decision.
